Daniel Smith is the data controller for the personal information described in this policy, and is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office under registration reference ZC246424.

If you contact me through the website or by email, I may receive information such as:

• your name and contact details
• your organisation and role, if provided
• information you include in your enquiry
• details relevant to the service you are asking about
• the campaign label on the link you arrived by, if you came from a tagged link such as one in a newsletter or a directory listing

You do not have to provide optional information.

The campaign label is the tag on the link itself, such as the name of a newsletter. It is not typed by you and it is not shown to you. It is read when you arrive and sent only if you choose to send an enquiry. Nothing else about your visit is attached to an enquiry: not the site that linked you here, and not the pages you read.

So that the campaign label is not lost if the page reloads, it is kept temporarily in your browser tab while you are on the site. Only the campaign information carried in the tagged link is stored for this purpose. It does not contain information from your enquiry, your browsing history or an identifier created by this website. Your browser removes it when that tab or browsing session ends. If you arrive without a tagged link, no campaign information is stored for this purpose.

The website may also collect limited, non-identifying information about how it is being used, such as which pages are viewed and the general type of device being used.

I use personal information only where necessary to:

• respond to enquiries
• discuss or prepare potential work
• provide services if you later engage Daniel Smith Advisory
• maintain appropriate business records
• operate and protect the website

I do not sell personal information.

I do not use information submitted through the website for unsolicited marketing.

The website does not use advertising or marketing trackers.

The website counts its own page views, without using a third-party analytics service. Each view records:

• which page was viewed, and when
• a two-letter country code for where the request reached the site from
• whether the screen is mobile, tablet or desktop size
• the address of the site that linked you here, if there was one, and never the full link or any search terms
• a random reference that lasts only while the tab is open, so a visit is not counted twice

The counter also records that an enquiry was sent, so that the number of enquiries can be compared with the number of visits. That record holds the same five things listed above and nothing else. It does not carry your name, your email address, your message, your reference or anything else you wrote. It is not linked by the website to the named enquiry you submitted.

It does not record your IP address, your browser or device identity, or anything that would recognise you on a later visit or on any other website. Nothing is stored on your device for this.

You can review or change available preferences using Cookie settings in the website footer. Switching the counter off stops the above from being recorded.

I use a small number of service providers to operate the website and communicate with people who contact me.

These currently include a cloud hosting provider for the website, a database provider for website data, a form and notification provider for enquiry messages, and a business email and communications provider.

They may process information only as necessary to provide those services.

Enquiries that do not become client work will normally be kept for no longer than 24 months after our last contact, unless there is a legitimate or legal reason to retain them longer.

If you become a client, some information may need to be retained for longer for contractual, legal, tax or professional reasons.

I take reasonable steps to protect personal information and restrict access to it.

No internet service can be guaranteed to be completely secure, but the website and the services supporting it are configured with appropriate security measures.

Under UK data protection law, you may have the right to ask me to:

• provide a copy of your personal information
• correct inaccurate information
• delete information where there is no reason to continue holding it
• restrict or object to certain uses of your information
